Tile trim size guide: matching trim depth to tile thickness
The single most common ordering mistake on a tile trim line item is buying a profile the same height as the tile. The trim has to clear the tile *and* the adhesive bed underneath it, so a trim ordered at the nominal tile size sits low and leaves the tile edge proud. This guide sets out the sizing rule the trade works to and maps it onto the profile heights High Tech India actually lists.
The sizing rule
General trade practice is to select a trim height equal to the tile thickness plus the adhesive bed, then round up to the next available profile size. On walls the bed is usually thin, so an allowance of roughly 1–2 mm is normal. On floors — and under large-format tile where the bed is deliberately thicker to correct level — an allowance of roughly 1.5–3 mm is more realistic.
Two further points matter in practice. Nominal tile sizes are not exact: an "8 mm" tile can measure anywhere from about 7.8 mm to 8.3 mm, so measure a few tiles from the actual batch with a vernier rather than trusting the box. And if the trim is going to be wrong in one direction, slightly too tall is far better than slightly too short — a shallow trim leaves the raw tile edge exposed, which is exactly the failure the trim was specified to prevent.

Converting a take-off into an order
PVC beading is supplied in fixed lengths — 5 m and 7 ft depending on the variant — so a run is priced in whole pieces, not linear metres. Aluminium and stainless profiles are quoted per metre. Add an allowance for mitre cuts at corners and for offcuts at the end of each run before you settle on a quantity, and check the MOQ column above: several profiles carry a minimum of 150 metres or 200 pieces, which can be the deciding factor on a small job.

What size tile trim do I need for 8mm tiles?
For an 8 mm tile, general trade practice is a 9–10 mm trim on walls and around 10 mm on floors, because the profile has to clear the adhesive bed as well as the tile. From the High Tech India range that means a 10 mm PVC tile beading or a 10 mm aluminium tile trim profile. Measure the actual tile first — nominal 8 mm tiles often measure slightly over.
What size tile trim for 10mm tiles?
A 10 mm tile normally takes an 11–12 mm trim once the adhesive bed is allowed for. In the High Tech India range that is the 11 mm PVC tile beading or the 12 mm stainless steel square-edge profile.
Can I use a trim the same size as the tile?
It is not recommended. A trim matched to the nominal tile thickness leaves no room for the adhesive bed, so the tile finishes proud of the trim and the edge you were protecting stays exposed. Always add the bed allowance and round up.
What happens if the tile trim is too tall?
A slightly taller trim leaves a small lip above the tile face. On walls this is usually acceptable and far preferable to an exposed edge. On floors a noticeably taller profile creates a trip point, so floor trims should be sized more carefully than wall trims.
