Tile spacer size and levelling clip selection
Spacers and levelling systems solve two different problems and are often confused when ordering. A spacer fixes the *width* of the joint. A levelling clip fixes the *height* difference between adjacent tiles — lippage — while the adhesive cures. Large-format tiling usually needs both.
Spacers set joint width
Joint width is a design and tolerance decision. Rectified tiles have machined edges and can be laid to a tight 1.6–2 mm joint. Non-rectified tiles vary enough edge to edge that a wider joint is needed to absorb the difference, otherwise the joint line visibly wanders. Floors generally take a wider joint than walls, and external work wider still to allow for movement.

Levelling clips control lippage
A clip-and-wedge levelling system pulls adjacent tiles into the same plane and holds them there while the adhesive sets. It matters most with large-format and rectified tile, where a fraction of a millimetre of lippage catches the light across the whole floor and is obvious in a way it never is on a small-format wall.
Clips are consumed on each use — the stem snaps off at floor level once the adhesive has cured — while wedges and equalisers are reused. Clip size is chosen against the joint width you are working to, and the clip has to suit the tile thickness range on the job.

Ordering quantities
Spacers and clips are both supplied by the pack, and consumption depends on tile format rather than floor area alone: a small tile uses far more spacers per square metre than a large one. Send us the tile size, the joint width and the area and we will work the pack count with you. Note that several spacer and clip lines carry minimum order quantities in the hundreds or thousands of packs, which is usually the constraint on smaller orders.
