Step nosing guide: aluminium, PVC or anti-skid tape

Stair nosing — often searched as step nosing in India — is chosen less by traffic level than by *when* it is being installed. A nosing bedded in as the tread is tiled is a different product from one retrofitted over a finished step, and specifying the wrong one is the usual cause of a nosing that stands proud or will not sit down on the tread.

New work or retrofit?

If the stair is being tiled now, an aluminium nosing can be bedded with the tread so the profile finishes flush with the finished surface. If the stair is already finished, the nosing has to wrap over the existing nose instead, which is what the L-shape section with a PVC insert is for. Anti-skid tape is the remedial option where no profile change is wanted at all.

Visual contrast at the step edge

A nosing does two jobs: it protects the tread edge and it makes the leading edge of the step visible. The second matters most on stairs used by the public and in poor light. A PVC insert in an aluminium carrier carries a colour band that contrasts against the tread; anti-skid tape does the same in black. Choose the contrast against the actual tread colour rather than in the abstract.

Ordering

Aluminium and PVC nosings are supplied in 3 m and 4 m lengths and priced per piece, with minimum quantities commonly around 30 pieces. Work out the number of treads and the going width, allow for cutting, and send that with the substrate condition so our team can confirm the appropriate section and current pricing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between stair nosing and step nosing?

They are the same product. "Stair nosing" is the more common international term and "step nosing" is used widely in the Indian trade. Both describe the profile fitted at the leading edge of a step.

Can stair nosing be fitted to an existing staircase?

Yes. For a finished stair, an L-shape aluminium section that wraps over the existing nose is the normal choice — our 60 mm variant is supplied in this form with a PVC insert. Where no profile change is wanted, anti-skid nosing tape is applied directly to the existing tread edge.

Which stair nosing is best for outdoor steps?

Aluminium sections handle outdoor exposure better than PVC, and the contrast insert helps visibility in changing light. Exposure, drainage and the tread finish all affect the choice, so send the site condition and our team will confirm a suitable option.
