Sizing the joint
The profile has to accommodate the designed movement of the structure, so the joint width comes from the structural drawing rather than from the finish. Our floor-to-floor profiles run 10x25 mm through 25x75 mm; the first figure is the joint depth and the second the width. Cover plates address wider architectural joints and are sized by visible plate width — 50, 75, 110 and 150 mm.
Where the joint carries traffic, the cover has to be trafficable as well as flexible, which is what pushes a specification from a PVC insert towards an aluminium or stainless section.
Choosing the material
PVC and aluminium cover most floor and wall conditions and are the cost-effective default. Stainless steel is used where appearance and cleaning matter or where the joint is in a wet or chemically exposed area. Brass is a finish decision rather than a performance one, chosen where the joint line is part of an architectural detail in a lobby or retail interior.

What is the difference between a floor-to-floor and a wall-to-floor expansion joint?
A floor-to-floor joint sits between two floor slabs and is trafficked from both sides, so the profile has to carry load across the gap. A wall-to-floor joint sits at the perimeter where a floor meets a wall and only has to accommodate movement at that junction, so the section is smaller — 10x25 mm in our range.
What size expansion joint cover do I need?
The joint width comes from the structural drawing, not the finish. High Tech India lists floor profiles from 10x25 mm to 25x75 mm and aluminium cover plates at 50, 75, 110 and 150 mm visible width. Send the designed joint width and the traffic condition and we will confirm a suitable profile.
